Not far from Miri, an about 1 hour drive away is the Niah National Park, house to the famous Niah cave which has a story dating back to 40,000 years ago. It is the place of oldest modern human settlement and civilization found in this region. Upon arrival, then by boat across a narrow river and about an hour trek one will arrive at this fame great archeological cave also home to bats, swiflets and other specially adapted form of life. Chances are that you will encounter with local collectors of bird nests and guano (bats and birds droppings). A quiet walk might bring you into encounter with birds and small faunas. Not to be missed is the Painted Cave, the site of the famous Niah cave paintings where the ‘death-ship’ was found. The contents of the death-ships is now at the Sarawak Museum but the aura of the area and the paintings on the wall still almost brings one backs to the feeling of being in ancient time.
