North of Pokhara, Nepal’s spectacular diversity appears at its finest. The deep valleys and high mountains encircling the giant Annapurna Himal (mountain) embrace a wide range of peoples and terrain, from subtropical jungle to a high, dry landscape resembling the Tibetan plateau. This is the most popular trekking region. It is also among the tamest areas with excellent lodges lining the main routes. There are three major trekking routes in this region: to Muktinath, to Annapurna Conservation Area Project, and a circuit of the Annapurna Himal itself. There are three major trekking routes in central Nepal : to Jomsom, to Annapurna Sanctuary and a circuit of the Annapurna Himal itself. Pokhara is a good starting place for short treks of one to four days, including the ‘Royal’, trek, which is described here. The trek to Ghorepani-Poon Hill (Pun Hill) which is located in Annapurna Region, is truly called as all the best of the trekking in Nepal. The trek offers the spectacular mountain scenery along with charming villages inhabited particularly by the Gurungs and Magars, dense rhododendron forest full of birds and deep subtropical valleys, all set below the Annapurna with the picturesque peak of Machhapuchhare (Fishtail Peak) dominating the sky line.
